Embrace Your Green PAW

Part of our Green Paw Initiative is to collect empty aluminum pop, beer and energy drink cans for recycling. We make a little bit of money on them but it helps keep Muskogee beautiful by keeping them off the side of the road and out of our landfills! We are so grateful for your donations, please continue!
Money Raised From the Recycling of Cans:

January 2010 - $80.34 / April 2010 - $163.09 / June 2010 - $182.36 / July 2010 - $189.41 / September 2010 - $204.00 /
November 2010 - $260.00 / January 2011 - $215.73

*These amounts vary according to what the price of aluminum is at the time.

A special thanks to Yaffe Iron & Metal Company for picking up our dumpster and ensuring we have a new one to fill. Thanks also to Ken Williams for picking up the full dumpsters.  You can always drop empty aluminum pop, beer or energy drink cans off at PAWS, 4321 East Hayes Street, across the street from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol on the East Access Road of the Muskogee Turnpike. If you need directions call 918-686-7297.

PAWS in the Air, Thank You Jerry Pippin

PAWS friend Jerry Pippin designated a special commercial on a recent show broadcast to no-kill shelters like PAWS. Thanks Jerry, for helping to get the word out about the great work of no-kill shelters and about our Muskogee PAWS!

"Valentine's Day is gone, but the spirit of love needs to be around all year long. We have done our annual tribute to romance with a new 'Words and Music of Love.' This year we donated a special commercial inside the show to all the no kill animal shelters around the world. There is no greater love than giving life itself, the animals need a chance for find that someone to love them. Check out our show, it features our favorite type of music, classic pop with full orchestra treatments with such artists as Tony Bennett, Errol Barner, 101 Strings, the Four Freshmen and my favorite two song treatments of all time - Stan Kenton " Street of Dreams " and Tony Martin and "I'll See You in My Dreams."

Chickens to the Rescue!

The following animal-friendly ice tip was sent in by a friend of PAWS:

“I've kept backyard chickens for years and have found that THE very best thing for icy sidewalks, etc is chicken scratch - actually it's the cracked corn in the mix that is the effective ingredient so if you have some plain cracked corn that's great.  This has the added plus of being food for birds and squirrels and it doesn't kill the grass.”

PAWS to PETS, Giving Life and Love to Rescue Animals and Families

Congratulations to Bruce and Barbara Green, for the newest member of the Green household. Once named Chandler, the Chihuahua mix was found running along Chandler Blvd. with one eye dangling out of the socket. (see Muskogee Phoenix article published Feb. 6).  Today, Precious is his new name. He has healed completely and has moved on to his next phase in life, taking care of the Greens!

Did You NOSE?

Dogs have about 25 times as many scent receptors as humans, enabling them to detect a single drop of blood in five quarts of water. They can recognize individuals human or canine by their scent. Dogs detect sights, sounds, and smells that are inaudible, invisible, and unsmellable to us.

Injuries that can be caused by yanking or pulling on a dog's collar include herniated discs, paralysis, damage to the vagus nerve, crushing or bruising of the trachea and fractured bones in the larynx. Prevent these injuries by using a figure-H harness instead of using a buckle collar or choke chain.

We'll Meet You at Rainbow Bridge, In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Best Friends

"...You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart."

Rigden: Known to many as "Rigs" the beloved Golden Retriever of the Caviness-Derby family passed away on November 10, 2010. Rigs joins her friend Audrey, the greyhound, at the Rainbow Bridge where she awaits the arrival one day of her human family. Rigs was 11 years-old when she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her spine. Her family was with her as she fell asleep. Having raised Rigs from when she was just days old, the Caviness-Derby family misses their sweet ball-chasing friend every day.

Emme & Lexi: Our sweet little best friends will be missed everyday and our hearts were truly blessed and life was greater with you in it  - we will cherish the wonderful memories. God Bless our sweet angels and thank you for your unconditional love and sharing your unforgettable souls with us. Team Carroll

Longtime PAWs member Beck Jones lost her Yorkie,  Laney Rae, that she adopted from PAWS to old age and congestive heart failure. Sadly she also lost Ginger, a PAWS adoptee that passed away in 2010 (photos not available).

Pet Photo Tips for PAWS’s Next Photo Contest
PAWS will again sponsor a pet photo contest in the Fall, but it’s never too early to break out the camera to capture just the right moment that can win over our judges. Stay tuned to PAWS newsletters announcing the date and details of our upcoming pet photo contest!
Here are some tips from the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA on how to photograph your pet:
    - Look for a location where your pet is relaxed. Also, consider the background and take pictures of your pet against background colors that contrast nicely with their coats. Keep backgrounds clutter-free so as not to distract from the star of your photo – the pet!

     - Pets with black and white coats are tricky because they are either darker or lighter than their surroundings. When working with black-coated animals, make sure the animal is not in a poorly lit room. A better location would be outdoors, in a sunny location or a room with plenty of natural light. When shooting an animal with a lighter coat, make sure the lighting isn’t too bright.

     - A pet’s eyes convey their personality, so focus on your pet’s eyes when shooting a close-up. Avoid shooting in low-light situations which can make your pet’s eyes appear to be glowing.

     -  Be patient! Taking the perfect shot takes time and many photos. Thank goodness for digital cameras that let you delete the not-so-good shots.

How Can i Help PAWSHere are Some Quick and Easy Ways You Can Help PAWS:

- Hold a garage sale, bake sale or car wash and give all the profits to PAWS.
- Instead of gifts for a birthday or holiday, ask people to give a donation to PAWS in your name.
- Collect aluminum cans (ex: pop, beer, energy drinks) and bring them to PAWS. We get money for recycling them.
- Collect Best Choice UPC codes and send them to PAWS. Better yet, collect them from co-workers, friends and neighbors too!
- A child can have host a child's birthday party where they ask all their friends to bring a “present” for the animals at PAWS instead.
- Donation of food, kitty litter or office supplies, stamps or gift cards from Lowe’s, Wal-Mart or Staples are always needed.
- In memory of the loss of a beloved pet or an animal lover in your family, why not honor them by making a donation in your beloved pet's name to PAWS.
- Share PAWS newsletter and subscribe link

Special PAWS Thank You and Recognition to Our Dedicated Volunteers! Celebrating Eighteen Years of Dedication
- Executive Director, Dorothy Farmer

Hope everyone got through the worst snow storm Muskogee and all of Oklahoma had in many years, we even broke some records I heard. I had to close for a week the first storm that hit and two days the second storm that hit.

Would like to thank the other people that volunteer for PAWS besides myself. Sue Cote for helping with taking pictures of PAWS animals for adoption and keeping pictures of them up-dated at Fish Plus in Arrowhead Mall and PETCO in Muskogee. And filling in for me when I can't take our animals to the vet. Also our treasurer Claudette Courtemanche for all she does. My husband Louis for keeping repairs done for PAWS and hauling cat litter when we run out and all the many other things he does to help PAWS.
Angie Gallant and Lisa Carroll for helping me with the new way we do the newsletter on our web page on line now. Mailing just got to costly for PAWS. And also thanks to our good employee at PAWS Jeffery Swearengin.. Also a member of PAWS, Patsy Rodin, that keeps us stocked with her good brownies and home made cakes. And for sure all the wonderful people that bring us there cans they save for us for recycling and those that save their Best Choice UPC Bar Codes for us.

PAWS helped with 60 Spay/Neuters in 2010. We had a total of 78 adoptions and received 3923 phone calls in 2010. We feel we had a good year considering money is short for everyone, including PAWS. We've had to take in many more dogs and cats this past year than normal because of the economy. So many people loosing their jobs or homes or just couldn't afford to feed their animals. Hope this will be a better year for all and that our war ends soon. Our country is the greatest country in the world and I have faith that we will survive.

Sincerely, Dorothy Farmer - Executive Director
